Questions

What is a version 4 UUID?

A 128-bit identifier made of 122 random bits plus 6 bits that mark its version and variant. It looks like 3f2b8c1e-9d4a-4f6b-8e21-5c7d9a0b1e23. The 4 at the start of the third group shows it is version 4.

Can two UUIDs ever be the same?

In theory yes, in practice no. You would need to generate about a billion UUIDs per second for around 85 years to have a 50% chance of a single duplicate.

Are these safe to use as database keys?

Yes. They come from crypto.randomUUID(), which uses a cryptographically secure generator. If you need keys that sort by creation time, look at UUID v7 or ULID instead.
