Questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
The number of seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC, also called the Unix epoch. It is the same number everywhere in the world, so it does not depend on time zones.
How do I know if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?
Look at the length. Present-day timestamps have 10 digits in seconds, 13 in milliseconds, 16 in microseconds and 19 in nanoseconds. JavaScript's Date.now() returns milliseconds, while most Unix tools and databases use seconds.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store the timestamp as a signed 32-bit integer overflow on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. 64-bit timestamps don't have this problem.
